Connell and Marianne are best friends who have known each other since school. Marianne was hated by her peers in the school. Both of them never interacted with each other in school. Yet, they were best of friends.
Both of them joined Trinity to pursue their studies after school. Here, she had a social circle contrary to her school days. It was the opposite for Connell in college with minimal social circle and not quite popular.
When they were together, they understood and loved each other, yet their relationship was a mystery. The author emphasised the complexities of their relationship and that of their characters as well.
I felt they had certain mental issues given their life experiences and circumstances. There is a part in the story where Connell goes to therapy for his mental health issues such as depression, suicidal thoughts and others. I liked that the author not only talked about the love and relationship between two young characters but also gave importance to Mental Health issues
